India-Jordan Relations

In 1947, India and Jordan signed their first bilateral agreement for cooperation and friendly relations. The full diplomatic relations were established in 1950 when India became a republic. Read important details about India-Jordan relations that will be helpful for the IAS Exam.

Jordan had announced in 2018, that Indians would be able to avail visa on arrival facility at all border crossings. The visa would be valid for a period of 30 days. A return ticket or proof of onward journey are the only documents required to avail this facility. Jordan has extended this facility to more than 25 Asian countries.

  1. India-Jordan completed their 65 years of diplomatic relations in 2015.
  2. The first-ever visit by Indian President to Jordan was made in 2015.
  3. The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, visited Amman in 2018.
  4. HM King King Abdullah visited India in 2018.
  5. In 2017, the 10th India-Jordan Trade and Economic Joint Committee took place.
  6. India has been offering the e-tourist visa facility to Jordan since 2014.
  7. Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR) provides 5 scholarship slots to Jordan natives.
  8. Jordan is the supporter of India’s claim of a permanent seat in United Nations Security Council.

How is the relationship between India and Jordan?

India is the 4th largest trading partner of Jordan. The trade agreement between India and Jordan is governed by the 1976 bilateral agreement. When King of Jordan visited India in 2018, 18 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between India and Jordan, to increase collaboration in the sphere of defense, cultural exchange, trade, health and education.

Political Relations between India and Jordan:

  1. In 2015, Jordan inaugurated Mahatma Gandhi road and also dedicated an olive tree for world peace during the visit of India’s President to Jordan.
  2. India and Jordan in 2015 launched 860 million US dollars JIFCO Joint Venture.

Cultural Relations between India and Jordan:

  1. Jordon has participated in 15th Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas, Hindi Diwas, National Voters Day and ICCR Foundation Day.
  2. An annual iftar event was jointly organized in Amman in 2019 for 100 kids of different orphan schools.
  3. Jordon participated in the 4th International Day of Yoga in 2019.

There are around 17,000 Indians living in Jordan. They are employed in many sectors like healthcare, construction, manufacturing, Finance etc. A portion of the Saddzagloul street was renamed as Mahatma Gandhi Road.
