  1. Genetics is the scientific study of heredity, genes, an inherited trait, patterns in genetic information mutations, and genetic variation in living organisms.

Ways in which genetics affect our lives:

  1. It helps to detect the abnormalities in the genes.
  2. These abnormalities can cause future diseases.
  3. It helps to detect other chronic and infectious diseases most of which lack effective treatment and cure.

Classification of genetic diseases:

Polygenic disorders:

  1. It is also known as multifactorial inheritance.
  2. Occurs due to the combined action of more than a single gene.
  3. Example- diabetes mellitus, hypertension, cancers, and cardiovascular diseases.

Monogenic disorders:

  1. They are also known as Mendelian disorders
  2. Occur due to mutation in a single gene.
  3. Example- Night blindness, phenylketonuria, and Rickets.

Chromosomal aberrations:

  1. Occur due to a defect in the arrangement of genetic material or defects in chromosomes.
  2. Example: Down syndrome, Klinefelter’s syndrome, Turner’s syndrome, etc.
