Question

Is Darwinism the same as evolution?

Open in App
Solution

No, Darwinism and Evolution are not the same. They are different.

Darwinism:

Darwinism refers to Charles Darwin's theory of species evolution through natural selection. Natural selection is one of the primary evolutionary mechanisms. It helps members of a specific population adapt to their surroundings.

Evolution:

The change in the heritable characteristics of biological populations over successive generations is referred to as evolution. Evolution is also driven by phenomena such as mutations, gene flow, and genetic drift, in addition to natural selection.

Difference between Darwinism and Evolution:

Darwinism Evolution
Charles Darwin's theory of species evolution through natural selection.Evolution is the process by which the heritable characteristics of biological populations change over successive generations.
Darwinism is an evolutionary theory. The progression of a specific population over time.
Natural selection, according to DarwinismNatural selection, gene flow, genetic drift, inbreeding, hybridization, or mutation are all examples of evolution.
Genetic variations arise as a result of sexual reproduction mechanisms such as allele mixing and crossing over.Overproduction, genetic variations, the struggle for existence, survival of the fittest, and natural selection all contribute to evolution.
Darwinism holds that observable changes occur in a short period of timeIt takes millions of years for an observable change to occur in evolution.
Light and dark peppered moths, long neck and short neck giraffes, and light brown deer mice are all examples of Darwinism.Human tail bones have vanished, human head size has shrunk, and the pinna has shrunk.
