CBSE to Drop Class IX and XI Open-Book Exams

CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) has stated that from this academic year, the students of 9th and 11th standard would not be able to take textbooks to the examination hall owing to the fact that it has been hampering the progress of critical skills in students. OTBA (Open Text Based Assessment) would thus be discontinued by the board mainly due to the negative response from the end of schools. The withdrawal would start from the 2017-18 session onwards.

OTBA was introduced for certain subjects like Biology, Economics and Geography was bought in by the board for 11th standard students and 9th standard students for English, Mathematics, English, Social Science and Science  back in March 2014. Under this scheme, text books were given to students four months before the exam along with the case studies to be carried during the exam. During the exam or examination students had the permission to carry their textbooks or notes for answering the questions. The aim was to promote application of learned material rather than trying to rote the learning content
