500+ Words Essay on Leadership

Leadership is a process by which a person influences others to accomplish an objective and directs the organisation in a way that makes it more cohesive and coherent. Leaders have the ability to get people to do what they don’t like to do and like it. Leadership is the behaviour of an individual when he is directing the activities of a group with a focus on a shared goal. Leaders perform various roles such as planning and implementing, evaluating, monitoring, controlling, motivating, managing conflicts, organising task groups, mobilising human and financial resources, and above all, setting an example to the group.

Qualities of a Good Leader

A leader has a clear vision. No matter what the situation, leaders communicate their ideas clearly and commit themselves to the outcome. A leader transforms his vision by gaining the trust and commitment of his team members. He has the ability to influence an organisation and to develop cooperative relations so as to be a team player.

A good leader should have the ability to motivate others as leadership is never an individual directing. It’s a cooperative effort which is performed by listening, gathering a variety of opinions, considering effective strategies and then generating a clear vision. The success of a leader depends on his ability to achieve a goal through his actions.

A leader needs to achieve tough, demanding goals that he set himself in addition to those set by an organisation, and focus on surpassing both objectives. It is important to have an entrepreneurial spirit in a leader.

A good leader listens to all members in his group and considers all options. Then takes a final decision and leads the organisation in the right direction. He respects each member and does not differentiate among them. He takes the criticism in a positive way and works for the betterment of the organisation as a whole.

An exceptional leader realises that he cannot accomplish everything on his own. He knows the talents and interests of his members, thus delegating tasks accordingly. He also recognises the efforts of team members and positively reinforces those actions. He appreciates his members with rewards and prizes.
