What is Time Management?
Time management means the management of individual life in an appropriate manner. It helps to decide what an individual wants to achieve in life and establish ways to attain his desires and objectives. Appropriate time management involves less stress and pressure, increases productivity and concentration, helps complete the greater goals of life, and helps achieve success. Time is the single, most indispensable and irreplaceable resource of accomplishment. It is the most precious asset. It cannot be saved, nor can it be recovered, once lost. It can only be used effectively.
Importance of Time Management
Time management allows one to decide how they want to use their time to make it more useful and productive for them. It enhances their knowledge about how to spend time in a constructive manner. Individuals learn how to systematize and manage their lifestyles in a useful manner, and not feel pressured or overburdened due to work. Time management is practised by giving priority to those things which are more important. The most important tasks are placed at the top of the list, and other tasks are placed below them as per requirement. Thus, it helps in increasing productivity, reduces stress levels and improves self-esteem. It also provides a sense of balance in life.
How to Manage Time
The more organised we are, the more effectively we will be able to use the 24 hours in a day. Ideally, every morning, one should make a list of everything they want or need to get things done that day. It is better to do this at night before going to bed. At that point of time, they should not think about which tasks are most important. They just have to write them all down. Once they get in the habit of doing their work efficiently, they might want to organise themselves for a few days in advance, to help plan longer projects. The next step is to prioritise the tasks on the list. They must assign “A” to those things that HAVE TO BE DONE. Then assign “B” to those tasks which SHOULD BE DONE and Assign a “C” to those chores that can be DEFERRED until the next day. This should be continued until they have prioritised the entire list of tasks.
Now that a prioritised list of everything is created, they need to make a schedule for completing these tasks. They should allocate the time for each task and try to finish it within the allotted time. While creating the schedule, they should make sure that it is flexible. There should be time for breaks, socialising and other little things that can come up in day-to-day activities. Allow space for unexpected things, and don’t try to plan out every minute of the day. While scheduling, keep personal needs and habits in mind. Be realistic and make a schedule that can be followed practically. By following the three simple steps, i.e., Organising, Prioritising and Scheduling, everyone can use their time effectively and productively.
