CLOTHING FABRIC

Clothes existed as long back as 100,000 years ago. Flax fibres were the first put to use as clothing fabric or dress materials followed by cotton. Closely followed by other fibres like a rush, reed, palm and papyrus have been used together with linen or flax to make ropes, fabrics, and other clothes. Silk was first introduced as a fabric in China. In modern days, clothing becomes mechanized, where machines have more to do with making cloth from dress material. Nevertheless, the clothing fabric or dress material remains the same.

We begin with the most common,

  1. Cotton: It is derived from a plant fiber of a tropical plant. Cotton is the most common type of fabric and basis of over 30 types of textiles. It is naturally derived from the cotton plant and is extremely durable. Cotton is also known as the fabric of life. Not only this, but it is also an extremely easy fabric to take care of and good for the environment.
  2. Linen: Linen is a natural fibre derived from the fibres flax plant. It is known and highly valued for its fresh and cool feel. Some fabrics like cotton or hemp are mistakenly called linen when woven in that fashion. It has been used for thousands of years and traced back to ancient Greece. It’s cool and lightweight nature is perfect for summer months.
  3. Polyester: It is a synthetic fabric made from byproducts of petroleum and coal, mixed with water and air. But it is quite flammable and has low water absorbance. Polyester is a miracle textile that originated in 1951. Its advantage is that it is wearable over and over without losing colour or shape.
  4. Silk: It is one of the oldest and most luxurious fabrics that first came up in China. This protein fibre is obtained from the cocoons of the mulberry moth. The clothing material or dress material reflects light, giving it an extremely beautiful sheen.
  5. Wool: It is a natural protein fibre derived from hair and fur of different animals, like bears, sheep, etc. The fibres are shorter than silk and generally tend to form a weave. Wool is allergic but keeps one extremely warm. It might be itchy though and shrinks with regular wash especially in hot water.
