CAT 2017 Exam Paper Analysis

The CAT 2017 was conducted on November 26, 2017 by IIM Lucknow. The exam was conducted across 144 test centres throughout the country. The exam was conducted in two slots i.e. morning slot or slot 1 (9 AM to 12 PM) and afternoon slot or Slot 2 (2:30 PM to 5:30 PM). CAT 2017 Exam Paper Analysis

An overall raw score of 155 to 160 can be considered a good attempt and the candidates scoring more than 160 can easily fall in the 98 to 99 percentile segment. The candidates can check CAT score vs Percentile to know more about the score calculation and percentile mapping.

Overall CAT 2017 Exam Paper Analysis

The overall difficulty of the CAT 2017 paper can be considered as moderate. The pattern for CAT 2016 was repeated this year. The number of questions remained same for both the slots and the difficulty of individual sections were almost same. Check the section-wise CAT 2017 analysis for both the slots below.

    Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension

    • The VARC section was easy and no complex questions were included.
    • 5 RCs were given with total 24 MCQs.
    • 3 para jumbles and 3 para summary questions of moderate difficulty were also included.
    • As the section was moderate, a score of above 25 with 90% accuracy can be considered as an excellent attempt.
    • Quantitative Aptitude

      • QA was the easiest section in CAT 2017 exam.
      • Maximum questions were from geometry, arithmetic and algebra.
      • Only 2 questions were included from the topic of Numbers
      • 8 TITA questions were present in the QA paper of both the slots
      • As the QA paper was easy, obtaining a  score of above 28 with 85% accuracy can be considered as a good attempt.
      • Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning

        • The LRDI section was the toughest section in the CAT 2017 paper.
        • 6 TITA questions were included in both the slots.
        • Several time-taking logical DI and confusing caselets were present in the paper.
        • As the paper was moderately difficult, a score of above 15 with 85% accuracy can be considered as a good attempt.
        • CAT 2017 Paper: Slot 1 Analysis

          Slot 1 paper was conducted from 9 AM to 12 Noon across various centres. The format and pattern were similar to CAT 2016 paper. An overall score of 160 can be considered as a good attempt. The detailed section-wise CAT 2017 exam analysis is given below.

          • Para Jumbles: 5-sentence type and time- consuming questions were included.
          • Summary-based: 100 words paragraph were given with 4 options.

            • Algebra: Questions were mostly based on inequalities and Quadratic Equations.
              • Arithmetic: Time-speed-distance and profit and loss dominated the arithmetic topics.
                • Permutation: Only 1 question was included from permutation and combination topic.
                  • Geometry: The questions from geometry dominated the whole quantitative section.

                    • Data Interpretation: Questions related to happiness index, matrix, flight operation, etc. were included. The questions were a bit difficult and time-consuming.
                    • Logical Reasoning: The LR questions included moderately difficult questions and most of the questions were solvable.
                    • CAT 2017 Paper: Slot 2 Analysis

                      The slot 2 was conducted between 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM. The question distribution among the sections was similar to slot 1. Some experts mentioned that slot 2 was a bit more tricky and difficult than the slot 1. Check the CAT 2017 paper analysis for slot 2 in detail below.

                                    • Data Interpretation: Questions related to pizza company, dorms and other table-based were included. The questions were tricky and time-consuming.
                                      • Logical Reasoning: The LR questions included bar graphs, chess problems, etc. The questions were solvable but time-consuming
