GMAT Eligibility Criteria

Graduate Management Admission Test or GMAT is a standardised competitive test for enrolling into business and management programs. GMAT demands its aspirants to possess an undergraduate degree so that they can appear for the test as one of the eligibility criterion. The test evaluates a candidate’s abilities through Analytical Writing, Integrated Reasoning, Verbal and Quantitative Problem Solving tactics.

Eligibility Criteria For GMAT

There’s no such GMAT Eligibility Criteria or guidelines provided by GMAC (Graduate Management Admission Council) for the GMAT exam. This is the reason it makes it so popular among individuals who would want to write the exam since there is no differentiation or bias on the grounds of gender, religion, financial background, educational qualification etc. However, the prospective aspirants must fulfill the following basic criteria before appearing for the GMAT exam.

  • The candidate must be a graduate in any stream from any accredited learning institution or universities.
  • The candidate’s age should be at least 18 years. In case, a minor wants to apply for the test, s/he has to get a written permission note either from parents or legal guardians.
  • The candidates must be proficient in the English Language.

NOTE – These are general guidelines to appear for GMAT exam. Fulfilling these criteria doesn’t assure your admissions in any MBA program at any University. Since the admissions process is entirely different and each university has its own set of prerequisites which the candidate has to satisfy before they can apply for admissions.

GMAC follows uniform norms for every test aspirants across the world. In India, the prospective test takers must meet the the above mentioned criteria to appear for GMAT 2018. There is no specific criteria for each country which the applicant has to satisfy before attempting the exam.

Q1. What are the minimum number of years of work experience required for enrolling in GMAT test?

Ans: GMAC does not propose any provision for minimum years of work experience to appear the GMAT test. But the B-schools may ask to submit the letters of relevant years of experience for enrolling into their campus courses at the time of admission process. Top B-schools usually require its applicants to have a minimum of 4-5 years of work experience. They prefer such experienced candidates over freshers mainly because they feel such individuals will be better suited to adapt to the rigorous schedules of an MBA program, the main form of learning in these classrooms occurs in the form of interactive sessions between the students or case studies based on real life business scenarios. Only candidates with sufficient years of experience will be able to adjust and contribute to such methods of learning.

Q2. What is the upper age limit of GMAT 2018?

Ans: There is no upper age limit for GMAT 2018.

Q3. What is the lower age limit for GMAT 2018?

Ans: As per GMAT eligibility criteria, the lower limit set by GMAC is 18 years. The test takers between the ages of 13-17 years are permissible to write down the exam after getting a written consent from their parents or legal guardian. Q4. Is fluency in English an eligibility criterion for GMAT 2018?

Ans: As per GMAT test rules, English fluency will not be an eligibility criterion. The Non-English natives can also take the test. Remember, the test evaluates English language skills through reading and writing; it is therefore, recommended that you have a basic clear understanding and knowledge about the subject.

Q5. Is it mandatory to have Mathematics as a subject in graduation as an eligibility criteria for GMAT?

Ans: No, there is no such prerequisite. Let’s reiterate that the test possess a section focussing on the quantitative aptitude, therefore it is only essential to have a sound knowledge about the subject before you attempt the exam. The syllabus of the exam comprises of basic and fundamental mathematical concepts which you may have learnt in your middle and high school. Therefore it is only necessary that you spend appropriate efforts to study the same and practice with sufficient mock tests so that you are able to achieve the target score of GMAT which you want.

Q6. What-if I Have Work Experience in India?

Ans: If you have work experience from Asian countries like India, Japan and many others then like every other individual your work experience will be valuable. Depending upon the proficiency required B-schools, may demand the students to have a few years of work experience. As already mentioned earlier, most of the top universities admissions committees require its applicants to have a minimum of 4-5 years of work experience since they feel that such individuals will be better accustomed to adapt to the rigorous schedules of the MBA program.

Q7. Should i have completed my bachelor’s degree in any specific field to be able to pursue an MBA?

Ans: No, GMAT doesn’t require candidates to possess a degree in any specific field. Since MBA is a master’s degree most of the universities will require the students applying to have a undergraduate degree but it can be from any discipline and need not be restricted only to management related subjects. Pursuing an MBA degree provides you with the opportunity to switch career fields to a subject which you are interested in, this may not be feasible otherwise.
