GMAT Quant Arithmetic Syllabus

GMAT Arithmetic Syllabus

GMAT Quant section comprises questions which involve arithmetic to certain extent. This test section follows an algorithm with every question the difficulty level increases. Here the candidates will be instructed to find the value of  a variable and often incorporate topics like Algebra, Geometry or Proportion. Therefore, it deals with positive or negative numbers.  The main aim of the section is evaluate your critical thinking for quick problem solving through calculating. The   section rewards the test takers who have answered the questions correctly. Some major topics are following –

Combinatorics -Factorials, Combinations, Permutations

Fractions

Percents

Number Properties

Operations

Probability

Statistics – Mean, Median, Mode, Standard Deviation

Combinatorics

  1. Definitions – Combinatorics, Combinations, Permutations
  2. Factorials

Simplifying Factorials

\(\frac{x!}{(x-1)!} = \frac{x(x-1)(x-2)…3(2)(1)}{(x-1)(x-2)…3(2)(1)} = x\)

Permutations

\(_{n}P_{k} = \frac{n!}{(n-k)!}\)

Where, n = the number of objects to choose from and k = the number of objects selected

Combinations

\(_{n}C_{k} = \frac{n!}{(n-k)!k!}\)

Where, n = the number of objects to choose from and k = the number of objects selected

Fractions

  1. Basic concepts – Numerator, Denominator, Common Denominator and Types of Fractions – Proper Fraction, Improper Fraction, Mixed Fraction, Equivalent Fraction
  2. Graphical Representation of Fractions – Number Line, Decimal and Percent Representation
  3. Equivalent Fractions
  4. Simplifying Fractions – Adding, Subtracting, Multiplying & Dividing Fractions
  5. Comparing Fractions – By Cross multiplying and Converting fractions into decimals and vice versa

Percents

  1. Basic Concepts – Fraction and Decimal Representation of Percents
  2. Percent Change –
\(Percent \; Change = \frac{(End \; Value) – (Start \; Value)}{(Start \; Value)} * 100\) \(Percent \; Change (as \; decimal)= \frac{(End \; Value) – (Start \; Value)}{(Start \; Value)}\)
  1. Interest Rate Problems

Number Properties

  1. Basic Concepts like – Integers, Units Digit, Factor (Divisor), Multiple, Prime Number, Parity, Greatest Common Factor (GCF) and Least Common Multiple (LCM)
  2. Divisibility Rules
  3. Factors & Multiples
  4. Prime Factorization

Operations

Basic Concepts – Sum, Difference, Product, Quotient, Dividend, Divisor

Probability

Basic Concepts – Event, Probability, P(A), Intersection of Events, P(A∩B), Union of Events, P(A∪B), Dependent Event, Independent Events, Conditional Probability, P(A|B), Mutually Exclusive Events, Complement of an Event
