The Prelims cut-off marks are for the General Studies Paper I only. The GS II paper was of a qualifying nature with 33% marks as the minimum required to qualify the Prelims examination.

In the UPSC CSE Mains exam, candidates are required to score the cut-off marks at least, subject to scoring 10% marks in each of the following papers: Essay, GS-I, GS-II, GS-III, GS-IV, Optionals I &II.

The UPSC does not use the term ‘cut-off’. It uses the term ‘minimum qualifying mark’.  This mark is simply the mark of the last candidate in the merit list prepared by the Commission. The list is in the descending order of the marks obtained. The merit list is prepared according to the number of vacancies in every category for a particular year. For example, if there are 300 vacancies for OBC category in a year, the mark of the last candidate in the OBC list (of 300) would be the cut-off for that category.
