1. India, U.S. will weather trade disputes: FarrellTopic: India-US Category: International Relations Key points : The two countries have had several irritants in their relationship on the trade front in recent   months. They include:

  • India’s restrictions of poultry imports from the U.S. on public health grounds
  • India’s local sourcing requirement for solar panels
  • S.’s application fees for H1B and L-1 category visas
  • The United States Trade Representative’s (USTR) Special 301 Report for 2016has kept India on a priority watch list as India has maintained that its IP laws are compliant with standards mandated by the WTO’s Trade Related Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) and has resisted ‘TRIPS Plus’ requirements in international trade deals
  • The U.S. has been pushing against India’s compulsory licensing laws for drugs in the interest of public health as well as against Section 3(d) of the India Patent Act, which prevents patents from being taken out on a product unless its efficiency is significantly enhanced

1. What is “Quenched” Galaxy? Topic: Space Category: Science and Technology Key Points: What is a quenched galaxy?

Several galaxies, at some point, stop making new stars. When this star formation is shut down they are known as “quenched” galaxies.

What do you mean  by Quench?

  • Cease star formation

What are the recent findings?

  •  External mechanisms (multiple gravitational encounters with other galaxies and the dense surrounding environment), result in material being stripped away from the galaxy
  • This halts the supply of cold gas to the galaxy
  • It leads to the strangling the galaxy of the material needed to produce new stars over a prolonged period of time.
  • nternal factors like the presence of a black hole could also play a part in this

2. Nasa images show toxic air challenge choking Indian subcontinentTopic: Air Pollution Category: Environment Key points: The report says:

  • Sunlight is blocked by airborne particles, providing a proxy for levels of pollution
  • Parts of the Indo-Gangetic plain—stretching across northern India from eastern Pakistan on one side to Bangladesh on the other—suffer some of the planet’s worst haze in October through January after monsoon rains end in September
  • As much as 10 times more solar beam was blocked over the plain from 2008 to 2014 compared with the US, signalling substantial concentrations in the air of the tiny, toxic PM2.5 particles that damage health

Other Important Points: –  The burning of vegetation by farmers or for cooking, as well as a winter climate and a topography that traps pollutants, all add to the problem –   The region has a valley-like topography that helps trap pollutants when temperatures cool – The World Bank in 2013 estimated the annual cost of environmental degradation in India at $80 billion – There’s strong evidence that poor air leads to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, stoking costs such as hospital visits or sick days from work, and even deterring tourism

1. The Economic Times:
A) E-commerce helping easy availability of pharma drugs and abuseTopic: E-Commerce/ Pharmaceutical Category: Health Key points: In the annual report of Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), 2015, it has stated:

  • The emergence of illegal websites (Internet Pharmacy) established in the USA, Europe etc. offering unregulated trade in a range of prescription medicines over the Internet has taken firm root in India as a supplier
  • These online pharmacies transmit orders from paying customers to agents in India, who then procure the medicines from either legitimate or illegitimate sources before dispatching them to customers by mail and courier
  • The sheer volume of international post makes it impossible to screen every parcel and hence a vast majority of illegal consignments passes by undetected by the authorities

It is leading to leading to easy availability of pharmaceutical drugs and their abuse

1. Asian Age
A) India sets sight on Sun’s corona experimentTopic: India’s Space Programme Category: Science and Technology Key points:

  • Aditya-1 which is also known as corona experiment aims to solve the Solar Mystery. For some reason, the Sun’s corona’s temperature is of 1 to 2 million degrees Celsius and sun’s surface temperature is 5,700 degrees Celsius
  • Visible Emission Line Coronagraph (VELC), the main payload for the mission is being built at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bengaluru
  • The coronagraph can also predict the space weather and can provide unique and very important information about understanding the heating, dynamics and temperature structure of the solar corona
  • The experiment will be placed in the Lagrangian point (L1). It is about 1.5 million kilometres from Earth where the gravitational force due to the Earth and the Sun works in the opposite direction and the payload put at that point can see the Sun all the time without any eclipse
