An election commission of a country is a body responsible for overseeing the execution of the election process. In India, the commission is called the Election Commission of India or EC in short, but it is called by different names in different countries such as ‘electoral commission’, ‘electoral branch’, ‘central election commission’ or ‘electoral court’. These commissions can be autonomous, judicial, mixed or governmental. They could also be charged with the job of electoral boundary delimitation. In a federation-like setup, there could be a distinct body for every subnational government.
