India established diplomatic relations with Thailand in 1947 immediately after independence. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands of India share a marine border with Thailand along the Andaman Sea. Two events that led to significant progress in the area of mutual ties between the two nations is the increased pace of the Look East Policy from 1993 and Thailand’s own Look West Policy from 1996.
From 2001 onwards, there has been significant progress in the relations which has seen rising warmth, greater commercial and economic links, and the striking of many agreements. Both countries are cooperating in several multinational organisations like the ASEAN with which India is a dialogue partner through the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), the East Asia Summit, the BIMSTEC (comprising of India, Thailand, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Myanmar and Bhutan) and trilateral transport ties involving India, Myanmar and Thailand.
