The UPSC topper Durishetty Anudeep had taken anthropology as his optional. Anthropology is a popular optional these days especially among students with a background in science or engineering. Three candidates among the top ten list in 2017 had this subject as their optional. It is considered scoring and has an interesting syllabus. Geography and mathematics were also taken by two toppers each last year. Although maths is not as popular some of the other subjects and it should be ventured into only if the candidate is absolutely sure of it, the subject can be scoring if you have a solid foundation and ample practice in it. Geography is another popular optional among IAS aspirants. There have been many toppers over the years with this optional. The biggest advantage of taking geography optional is that it has a good overlap with general studies paper I. Many students also find it an interesting subject. Other popular optionals include political science, history, economics, public administration and even psychology. The UPSC also gives the option of choosing the literature of language as an optional.
