North Korea is a country in the northern part of the Korean Peninsula in East Asia. It is officially known as the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. The name ‘Korea’ originates from the Kingdom of Goguryeo (Koryŏ). The capital of North Korea is Pyongyang. It is also the largest city teeming with a population of more than 2.5 million people. The sovereign nation is bordered by Russia and China, along the Amnok and the Tumen Rivers. To the East, there is the Korea Strait which separates it from Japan. To the south, it is bordered by South Korea (officially the Republic of Korea). The heavily-fortified ‘Demilitarised Zone’ separates both the countries. Kim Jong-un is the Supreme Leader of the totalitarian dictatorship.
