One Belt, One Road

The One Belt One Road (OBOR) Initiative is a development strategy proposed by the Chinese President Xi Jinping. It is alternatively known as The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). It is a policy framework intended to ‘connect China to the world’ thereby increase China’s presence in global affairs. The project underlines among others China’s need to export its production capacity because of overproduction in certain areas like steel manufacturing. This plan encompasses building trade routes and connectivity between China and the rest of Eurasia. The OBOR has two components: the ‘Silk Road Economic Belt’ which is land-based, and the ‘Maritime Silk Road’ which is oceangoing. The initiative which was started in 2013 has a proposed completion date of 2049. The project is also dubbed ‘The New Silk Road’.
