SpaceX or Space Exploration Technologies Corporation is an American corporation is in the aerospace manufacturing domain and offers space transport services. It is headquartered in Hawthorne, California. It was founded by entrepreneur, investor and inventor Elon Musk in 2002. Musk is also the CEO of Tesla Motors. The objectives of SpaceX is to diminish the cost of space transportation and to colonize Mars to prevent humanity from extinction.
It is privately funded. Its first launch vehicle, Falcon I and three rocket engines named Merlin, Draco and Kestrel were developed entirely with private capital. In 2015, the company requested permission from the US government to commence testing for a project that seeks to construct a constellation of 4000 satellites which could be capable of beaming the internet to the whole planet. This includes those places which currently do not have internet connection.
Falcon 9 was launched by SpaceX on a NASA cargo run to the International Space Station. The company wants to develop cheap and reusable rockets and expand its advantage in the commercial space launch domain.
