UPSC Syllabus (Prelims) for Civil Services IAS IPS Exam

The UPSC Civil Services Prelims Exam is only a screening test and the marks scored by the candidates’ in the exam will be declared to be qualified for the Mains Exam but will not be considered for the final ranking of the candidates.

The UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Examination comprises of two papers i.e., General Studies Paper-I and CSAT Paper-II with objective questions or generally called as multiple choice questions (MCQ).

Each paper carries 200 marks that sum up to 400 marks, the civil services preliminary exam is aimed to be as a screening test only. In the CSAT Paper 2 of Civil Services preliminary Exam, the candidates will have to score a minimum 33 percent of marks, whereas, the marks of General Studies Paper-I will be taken into account for ranking in the prelims based on which the candidates will qualify in UPSC Mains Exam (written).

The GS (CSAT) Paper II commonly known as aptitude test covers the analytical section and it is qualifying in nature in which candidates should secure a minimum of 33 percent (66 marks out of 200) to qualify for the next stage of the examination i.e. UPSC Mains Exam.

Candidates who qualify for the UPSC Mains Exam of a particular year will be eligible to write the mains exam of that particular year only.

  1. The CSAT Paper-II aptitude test of the Civil Services Preliminary examination will be a qualifying paper only with a minimum of 33% to be scored to appear for the Civil Services Mains Exam.
  2. The questions in both Paper-I (General Studies) and Paper-II (CSAT) will be of multiple choices or objective type of 200 marks each and the time allotted for each paper is 2 hours.
  3. It is compulsory for the candidates to appear in both the papers of Civil Services Prelims Examination for the purpose of valuation. In case a candidate does not appear in both the papers of the IAS prelims exam will be disqualified.
