Tax Policy Research Unit

The Tax Policy Research Unit (TRPU) is a committee constituted by the government of India to update India’s tax policy and its administration. It is a multi-disciplinary body comprising of officers from CBDT and CBEC, economists, statisticians, researchers and legal experts. Its objectives are:

  1. Conduct studies on different topics under fiscal and tax policies suggested by the CBDT and the CBEC; and also to conduct an independent analysis of these topics.
  2. Prepare and distribute policy and background papers on different issues of tax policy.
  3. Help the Tax Policy Council (headed by the Finance Minister) to take suitable tax policy decisions.
  4. Collaborate with the State Commercial Tax Departments.
