IAS 2017 Prelims Exam – The First Stage of the UPSC Civil Services Exam

The UPSC 2017 Civil Services Exam is to be conducted on June 18, 2017, while the prelims exam for 2016, 2015, and 2014 were held during the month of August. After three years, UPSC will conduct the prelims exam in the month of June while the UPSC syllabus for 2017 has not seen any changes and also the exam pattern remains the same, which candidates can checkin the UPSC Civil Services Exam Notification 2017. 

Every year around 9 lakh candidates apply for the exam while only few lakh appear in the exam and more than ten thousand make it to the second stage and only a thousand are selected for the posts to be filled in the civil services of India.

UPSC 2017 Civil Services Prelims Exam Pattern

The UPSC prelims exam consists of two papers of objective or MCQ type questions and each paper carries 200 marks each. The Paper I has 100 questions for 200 marks while the paper II has 80 questions for 200 marks. The question papers are set in English and Hindi. 

The prelims exam with two papers are held in two sessions that is Paper I in the morning session and Paper II in the Forenoon Session.

Negative Marking

There is anegative marking in the prelims exam for each wrong answer in Paper I and Paper II. For every wrong answer, 1/3rd (0.66) of marks allotted for every question will be reduced from the correct tally of score.  Hence candidates should be more cautious before answering questions in the prelims exam by making wild guesses.

IAS Exam 2017 Syllabus: Prelims Paper-I

The General studiesPaper I syllabus includes mainly subjects like History, Geography, Science, Polity, Economics and Current Affairs. 

Below given is the complete syllabus of prelims Paper I and Paper II 

The syllabus for the Preliminary Exams for Paper-I:

  • Current events of national and international importance.
  • History of India and Indian National Movement.
  • Indian and World Geography – Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World.
  • Indian Polity and Governance – Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
  • Economic and Social Development – Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector initiatives, etc.
  • General issues on Environmental Ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change
  • General Science

IAS Exam 2017 Syllabus: Prelims Paper-II 

The General studies Paper II also called as CSAT Syllabus is more of analytical, problem       solving and aptitude test. It is qualifying in nature and a candidate should score at least 33% or 66 marks in the Paper II to clear the prelims exam and qualify to the mains exam, the second stage of the exam.

  • Comprehension
  • Interpersonal skills including communication skills;
  • Logical reasoning and analytical ability
  • Decision-making and problem solving
  • General mental ability
  • Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. – Class X level)

 

A candidate should appear in both the papers of Prelims Exam to qualify in the evaluation process. The candidate will be disqualifies in case he or she appears in only one paper of the Prelims Exam however it will be considered as an attempt ( as number of attempts and age criteria are the eligibility criteria considered by the UPSC). 

The UPSC Civil Services Exam is a screening test for candidates, the marks of the Paper I alone is considered to make the merit list of the candidates who qualify for the mains exam, however the prelims marks is not counted in the final merit ranking.
