UPSC Results

The civil services exam is conducted every year by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) in order to recruit officers into the Indian civil services. The candidates who are selected go on to serve in different capacities in various all-India services such as the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Revenue Service (IRS) and so on.

The UPSC Civil Services exam (CSE) is one of the most prestigious exams in the country and its success rate is also quite low. On an average, starting with about 5 lakh candidates who take up the preliminary exam (the first stage), ultimately only 700 – 1000 candidates are selected to the services. Due to this reason, and also the extremely high position these officers, especially IAS officers, are accorded in society, the UPSC results are an eagerly awaited phenomenon. The toppers become “famous” overnight and are kept busy giving interviews to various TV channels and newspapers.

UPSC Civil Services Exam Stages:

Stage 1: Prelims

This stage consists of two papers called General Studies I and General Studies II (CSAT). Both of them are held on the same day in two different sessions. Both are objective papers (MCQs). The CSAT is a qualifying paper while the marks obtained in GS I are counted for the merit ranking. Candidates who qualify the prelims by securing the minimum cut-off marks are eligible to appear for the next stage of the UPSC CSE, the mains written exam.

Stage 2: Mains (Written)

This stage consists of nine descriptive papers. The papers are: English Language, Indian Language, Essay, GS I, GS II, GS III, GS IV, Optional paper I, and Optional paper II.

Stage 3: Personality Test (Interview)

The final stage in the UPSC IAS exam process is the interview stage. Here, a UPSC panel interviews the candidate and assesses him/her in terms of various prescribed parameters. The panel, through a discussion, tries to evaluate if the candidate is fit for a career in the services or not.

Once a candidate clears all three stages of the UPSC exam, he or she will be posted to a service depending upon his/her rank, category, preferences and vacancies available.

Under this segment, you can check out the various results of the UPSC IAS exam. The results come in three stages as this exam has three stages, each stage eliminating a chunk of the candidates. The table below gives a tentative timeline for the UPSC CSE stages and their results.
