Question

A particle of mass 1kg slides down a frictionless track AOC starting from rest at a point A height2m. After reaching C, the particle continues to move freely in air as a projectile. When it reaches its highest point Pheight1m the kinetic energy of the particle inJ is:(Figure drawn is schematic and not to scale; take g=10ms-2_____.

Solution

Step1: Given data.

Mass of the particle m=1kg

Height at point A, hA=2m

Height at point P, hP=1m

Step2: Finding the Final kinetic energy of the freely moving particle.

We know that,

From given figure mechanical energy conservation between point A and P.

Ui+Ki=Uf+Kf

Where,

Ui is initial potential energy

Uf is final potential energy

Ki is initial kinetic energy

Kf is final kinetic energy

now,

Ui+Ki=Uf+Kf

⇒mghA+0=mghP+Kf

⇒ Kf=mghA-mghP

⇒ Kf=mghA-hP

⇒ Kf=1×10×2-1

⇒ Kf=10J

Hence, the kinetic energy of the particle is 10J
