Question

Are covalent bonds strong?

Open in App
Solution

Definition of covalent bond:

  1. Covalent bonds are formed by the mutual sharing of electrons between two atoms.
  2. Example: C-C,C-H,C-O

Explanation:

  1. Covalent bond can be formed by end-to-end overlapping (sigma bond) and sidewise overlapping (pi bond).
  2. Since covalent bonds are studied in organic chemistry and organic compounds are known to exist and hence considered to be stable in nature.
  3. Thus we can say that covalent bonds are stronger bonds.
  4. Even we know that C-C bond strength is approximately 83 kcal/mol which is very high thus indicating that covalent bonds are stronger in nature.
  5. Hence, covalent bonds are strong.
