Question

Do bases change the colour of indicators?

Open in App
Solution

Base:

  1. Bases are those substances that accept hydrogen ions H+ and neutralize an acid for example NaOH.
  2. Indicators are dyes that are chemically weak acids or bases.
  3. Now, when we add base in an indicator, which is a weak base or acid, its colour changes due to a change in its acidity or basicity.
  4. Similarly, the colour of litmus paper is changed when we dip them in an acid or base.
  5. Therefore, bases change the colour of indicators.
