How do you find conditional probability?

Open in App
Solution

Definition of conditional probability:

The probability of happening of an event Awhen another event Brelated to Ahas already happened is called conditional probability and is denoted byPA/B.

The formula to find conditional probability is given by:

P(AB)=P(AB)P(B)

For example:

A coin is tossed three times, If given that an event that shows the first toss was head, then what is the probability of three heads.

let Bis the event that shows the first toss is head and Ais the event of an occurrence of three heads

B=HHH,HHT,HTH,HTT and A=HHH

So, AB=HHH

Then P(getting 3heads given that first toss is head), or

PAB=P(AB)PB=14
