Question

How do you solve the modulus of a quadratic equation?

Open in App
Solution

Let us take an example to solve the modulus of a quadratic equation:

|x26|=-x+6

Step 1. When |x26|0,

then, x26=-x+6

x2+x12=0

x23x+4x12=0

x(x3)+4(x3)=0

(x3)(x+4)=0

x=3orx=-4

Step 2. When |x26|<0,

then, -(x26)=-x+6

x2x=0

x(x1)=0

x=0orx=1

Hence, there are four solutions for the assumed modulus quadratic equation, they are 0,1,2,-4.
