How do you Test for Anions

Anion analysis may clearly determine which anions are present in a sample (qualitative analysis) or the amount of anions present in a sample (quantitative analysis). In order to classify and measure the anion structure, conventional wet chemistry uses colorimetric approaches.

The test mentioned here for chloride ions is based on the precipitation of an insoluble salt of chloride. A white precipitate of silver chloride will form when a few drops of a silver nitrate solution are applied to a mildly acidic aqueous solution containing chloride ions.
