The steps to convert Toluene into Benzyl Alcohol: This conversion is completed in two steps
Step1: When Toluene reacts with Chlorine in presence of UV light, Benzyl chloride is obtained. this step is known as Free radical Chlorination of Toluene. There is no change in Benzene ring, the reaction takes place only aliphatic methyl group.
Step2: The nucleophilic substitution of Benzyl chloride takes place to form benzyl alcohol.
Thus, by this reaction, Toluene can be converted into Benzyl Alcohol.
