Question

How many dimensions are there?

Open in App
Solution

The number of dimensions:

There are three dimensions that define the length, breadth, and depth of all the objects in the universe (thex,y and zcoordinates).

Example of one-dimension :

The line is an example of a one-dimensional object because only one coordinate is required to specify a point on a line.

Example of two-dimension :

The surface of a plane, cylinder or sphere is an example of a two-dimensional object. Two coordinates i.e., (x-coordinate and y-coordinate) are needed to specify a point on it.

Example of three-dimension :

The third dimension involves depth (z-coordinate). A perfect example of a three-dimensional object is a cube, which has length, breadth, height, and hence volume.

Beyond these three visible dimensions, it is believed that there are many more. Scientists believe that time is the fourth dimension.
