Question

Is an electron a lepton ?

Open in App
Solution

Electron:

  1. An electron is a negatively charged subatomic particle.
  2. It can be either free (not attached to any atom) or bound to the nucleus of an atom.
  3. Electrons in an atom exist in a spherical shell of various radii, representing energy levels.
  4. The larger the spherical shell, the higher the energy contained in the electron.

Lepton:

  1. Any member of a class of subatomic particles that respond only to the electromagnetic force, weak force, and gravitational force.
  2. Leptons are said to be elementary particles, that is, they do not appear to be made up of smaller units of matter.
  3. Leptons can either carry one unit of electric charge or be neutral.
  4. Electrons are the lightest leptons and have a mass of only 11840that of a proton.

Hence, an electron is a lepton.
