Electromagnet

  1. The magnetic field produced due to current flowing in a coil or a solenoid can be used to magnetize a material like soft iron temporarily.
  2. The insulated copper wire is wrapped in a soft iron piece.
  3. When current is passed through the coil using a battery and a key the iron piece behaves like a bar magnet as long as the current is being passed.
  4. Such a magnet is called an Electromagnet.

Inductor

  1. Inductors are passive two-terminal components of an electric or electronic circuit that are capable of storing energy in magnetic form.
  2. They oppose sudden changes in current and they are also called coils or chokes.
  3. They are known for their electric symbol L.

  1. When electric current starts to flow in a conductor, a magnetic field is established around the conductor in the direction of the right-hand thread.
  2. When current flows through an inductor with conductors wound around it in the same direction, the magnetic field established around the wire (conductor) is bound together and the inductor becomes an electromagnet.
  3. Conversely, electric current can be generated from a magnetic force.

Hence, the inductor is an electromagnet.
