Question

Does HNO3 contains a coordinate bond?

Open in App
Solution

Explanation with a diagram:

A coordinate bond is a nitric acid (HNO3).

The nitrogen atom is bonded to three oxygen atoms: one via a single chemical bond, another via a double chemical bond, and another via a basic (coordinating) chemical bond, Aqua Fortis have a coordination chemical bond.

Diagram:

  1. The Lewis structure is HNO3 best thought of asNO3 with at least one oxygen atom attached to it.
  2. Many acids exhibit this pattern, calculating the total number of valence electrons in the HNO3 Lewis structure.
  3. Determine the percentage of valence electrons in HNO3and wrap them around the central atom to complete the octet. Be sure to use the number of valence electrons you found earlier.
  4. HNO3 Lewis structure has 24 valence electrons.
  5. Two atoms share a pair of electrons to form a chemical bond. Because the electron pair is attracted by both nuclei.

Hence, HNO3 ,it is a coordinate bond.
