Question

Is Ion Dipole interaction stronger than Hydrogen bonding?

Open in App
Solution

Ion Dipole: The attraction between a charged ion (cation or anion) and a molecule is known as the ion-dipole interaction. When ionic compounds dissolve in polar solvents, it's common to see them in the solution, as the charge on the ion or the magnitude of the dipole of the polar molecule increases, so does the strength of the ion-dipole attraction.

Example of ion-dipole :

Hydrogen bonding: A hydrogen atom attached to a highly electronegative atom interacts with another very electronegative atom to form hydrogen bonds, a type of intermolecular force. resulting in a dipole-dipole interaction. For example, Water has an electronegative oxygen atom covalently bonded to hydrogen molecules (H2O).

Example of hydrogen bonding: Hydrogen bonding in water

Hence, the Ion dipole is stronger than Hydrogen bonding.
