In which situation is no work done?

Open in App
Solution

Work done:

  1. Work is done when some kind of energy is transferred from one store of energy to another.
  2. Work is also done when we apply a force to an object, and it causes that object to move.
  3. When work is done against some kind of frictional force acting on an object, thus causing the object's temperature increases.
  4. Mathematically, in its simplest form, W=F.d, Where W=Work done, F=Force, d= Displacement,
  5. When we apply a force to the object, it causes the object to move, and then we say work is done by the force.
  6. If the object is not moved even an inch by the applied force, then no work is said to be done.
  7. Some more examples of no work done are given below:
    1. You sit on a chair for hours.
    2. If a block moves on a smooth horizontal surface, no work is done.
    3. If you push a wall, but it doesn't move, then no work is done.
    4. Sleeping for many hours is also an example of no work done.
    5. If you carry two bags in your hands and are not moving, then no work is done.

Thus, no work is said to be done if we apply force to an object and it doesn't move.
