Question

Name the characteristics of group four elements.

Solution

Groups in Periodic Table:

  • A group (also known as a family) in chemistry is a column of chemical elements in the periodic table.
  • The periodic table has 18 numbered groups; the f-block columns (between groups 2 and 3) are not numbered.

Characteristics of Group 4 elements:

  • Titanium (Ti), Zirconium (Zr), Hafnium (Hf), and Rutherfordium (Rf) are the elements of Group IV.
  • The first three metals are mostly hard metals under normal conditions and occur naturally as oxide ores.
  • Rutherfordium (Rf) is usually created in a laboratory setting.
  • They have a strong preference for oxygen.
  • Due to the loss of all four ns2(n-1)d2 valence electrons, they primarily have a +4 oxidation state.
  • As we proceed down the periodic table's column, the group IV elements become denser, have higher melting points, and are more electropositive.
  • They have a proclivity for forming diverse inorganic compounds.
