What are the two laws of probability?

Open in App
Solution

Laws of Probability:

Probability is the chance of occurrence of an event.

The two laws of probability are:

  • Addition rule
  • Multiplication rule

Addition rule:

If Aand Bare mutually inclusive events i.e., both can occur simultaneously, the addition rule is

PAB=PA+PB-PAB

If Aand Bare mutually exclusive events i.e., both cannot occur simultaneously, the addition rule is

PAB=PA+PB

Multiplication rule:

If Aand Bare dependent events, the multiplication rule is

PAB=PA·PB|A or PAB=PB·PA|B

If Aand Bare independent events, the multiplication rule is

PAB=PA·PB
