Question

What is a non-zero net force?

Open in App
Solution

  1. The push or pull on an object with mass that causes it to change its velocity can be defined as a force.
  2. Force is a vector quantity.
  3. The SI unit of force is Newton.
  4. There can be several forces acting on a body at the same time.
  5. The vectorial sum of all these forces is called the net force. If after the sum, all these forces do not cancel each other, the remaining force is called the non-zero net force.
  6. Let us assume, F1=F2=F3, where the magnitudes of the forces are equal. The direction of F1andF2 are same but F3is in the opposite direction. So, the net force is
    Fnet=F1+F2-F3Fnet=F2
  7. An object's speed will change if a non-zero net force is acting on a body.
