Question

What is ion Polarization?

Open in App
Solution

Ion polarization:-

  1. Ionic polarization occurs in the ionic compounds, where the oppositely charged ions that are the cations and anions move in opposite directions under the influence of the electric field in order to produce a net dipole moment in them.
  2. The ions move because of the lattice vibrations and the relative displacement of the ions in the compound causes the center of the charges to be different.
  3. This is affected by the symmetry of the displacements.
  4. When these centers are not able to correspond with each other, it gives rise to polarization.
  5. Hence this polarization is called ionic polarization.
  6. Examples of such types of compounds are Sodium chloride(NaCl) and Potassium chloride(KCl).
