Question

What are mean deviation and standard deviation?

Open in App
Solution

Mean deviation:

  • The mean deviation is a statistical measure that is used to calculate the average deviation from the mean value of the given data set.
  • Formula: MD=1ni=1nxi-μ

Standard deviation:

  • Standard Deviation is the measure of dispersion. It means how far the data values are spread out from the mean value.
  • Formula: σ=i=1nxi-μ2n

Example: Data set: 3,4,5,7,8,9

The mean of the data set is,

μ=3+4+5+7+8+96

μ=366

μ=6

The mean deviation of the data set is,

MD=3-6+4-6+5-6+7-6+8-6+9-66

MD=-3+-2+-1+1+2+36

MD=126

MD=2

The standard deviation of the data set is,

σ=3-62+4-62+5-62+7-62+8-62+9-626

σ=-32+-22+-12+12+22+326

σ=9+4+1+1+4+96

σ=286

σ=2.16
