What is Positive and Negative Charge

Atoms of extra electrons or lacking electrons are particles. We have a positive charge where an electron or two is absent. We have a negative charge because we have an extra electron or two.

The electrons and protons within an atom bear much of the electric charge. It is said that electrons bear negative charges, and protons carry positive charges, but these labels are largely random. Two protons, by comparison, repel each other, as do two electrons.
