What is the colour of lead monoxide?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Lead monoxide (PbO) is also known as Lead (II) oxide with a molecular mass of 223.20gmol-1.
  2. Lead monoxide is used in the manufacturing of batteries, glass, electric and electronic products etc. and it basically exists in two forms:
  3. Litharge: It is a tetragonal crystal at room temperature which is red in colour.
  4. Massicot: It is a stable orthorhombic crystal having a yellow colour above 489°C.

Lead monoxide is synthesized by three methods:

  1. Lead oxidation in the air by using different forms of Lead at different temperatures: PbO2(s)293°CPb12O19(s)351°CPb12O17(s)375°CPb3O4(s)605°CPbO(s)
  2. Thermal decomposition of Lead nitrate and Lead carbonate: 2PbNO32(s)2PbO(s)+4NO2(g)+O2(g)PbCO3(s)PbO(s)+CO2(g)
  3. Thermal decomposition of raw Lead ore (Lead sulfide): 2PbS(s)+3O2(g)1000°C2PbO(s)+2SO2(g)

Colour of Lead monoxide:

  1. Before heating process: It is a stable red colour compound.
  2. After the heating process: It is a meta-stable yellow colour compound. PbO(s)Red+1.6kJmol-1~500°CPbO(s)Yellow
