The iron loss is caused by flux density variations in the transformer core, The copper loss is caused by I2R in the transformer winding.
Electrical energy is turned into mechanical energy initially. The magnetic core is a route for magnetic energy. During magnetization and demagnetization of the core, energy is wasted.The primary and secondary windings of a transformer have a particular resistance. The resistance of the winding is determined by the wire diameter and number of turns. The heat loss in the winding is caused by the current flowing in the primary and secondary windings. Copper loss is the heat loss in the coil.

The iron losses in the transformer's iron core are of two types.

  1. Hysteresis loss
  2. Eddy current loss

Hysteresis loss is the heat loss in the core caused by repetitive magnetization demagnetization.

The flux generated by the primary winding is carried through the magnetic core. It also connects to the secondary winding. Some of the flux binds to the core, causing it to generate voltages of varying magnitudes.
