Question

What is the difference between physical optics and geometric optics?

Open in App
Solution

The difference between geometric optics and physical optics is given below:

Physical optics Geometric optics
1. In physical properties, we develop much more advanced concepts on the basis of Huygens's principle and consider the properties of light as a wave.1. In Geometric optics, we treat light as a ray or single beam and study its properties.
2. Physical properties deal with Young's double-slit experiment and interference of light, etc.2. Geometric optics deal with mirrors, lenses, the formation of the rainbow, the total internal reflection phenomenon, etc.
3. In physical properties, the size of an object is comparable to the wavelength of light.3. In geometric optics, properties of light like a wave, become insignificant like an object and deal with very large as compared to the light's wavelength.
