Question

What is the pH of Milk?

Open in App
Solution

Part 1: pH

  • The pH of any solution is defined as the negative log of Hydrogen ion concentration.
  • Mathematically, pH=-log10[H+]
  • pH is used to determine the nature of the solution whether it is acidic, basic, or neutral.
SolutionpH range
Acidic1 - 6.9
Neutral7
Basic7.1 - 14

Part 2: Identifying the pH of Milk

  • Depending on the values of pH we can further classify the solution as strongly and weakly acidic and basic.
  • The pH level of milk lies between 6.5 to 6.7 and it is slightly acidic in nature.
  • However, the pH level can vary as there are different sources of milk. We get milk from mammalian species and even from certain plants. Non-dairy milk like cashew, soy, coconut, and almond milk have pH levels of around 6.
  • In the case of coconut milk, when it is taken out fresh it is slightly alkaline, and when it starts drying it becomes acidic.
