Question

Which element is the best insulator?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Insulators are the elements that create barriers in the flow of electrons and so they do not conduct electricity.
  2. No such material works efficiently best as insulators but the material which resists the electric current up to the maximum extent is the best insulator.
  3. Insulators can be used in electric appliances, and wires, for separating the conductors from their surroundings.
  4. Metals are generally good conductors of electricity but nonmetals are not.
  5. The exception exists: Graphite is nonmetal yet it is a good conductor of heat and electricity.
  6. Group 18 of the periodic table works best as insulators.
  7. This is due to the completely filled shells, and so they do not allow the electrons to move freely.
  8. They are much more stable in nature.
  9. Silicon and Sulphur are the elements that act as good insulators.
  10. Example: Diamond is made up of Carbon, connected with other four Carbon atoms.
  11. Diamond is the best insulator as they do not have free electrons to move.
