During electrolysis, the ionization of the electrolyte takes place when the charges move to opposite electrodes from positive and negative electrodes. This can be achieved when the polarity is maintained opposite and throughout the process, which is achieved by dc supply.
If we use ac supply then the polarity of the electrodes keeps changing which will affect the electrolysis. Therefore, ac cannot be used in electrolysis.
