Question

Why are electrons important in an atom?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Atom is made up of charged particles such as protons, neutrons, and electrons.
  2. The atom is electrically neutral, and this is because the proton is positively charged, the electron is negatively charged and the neutron is neutral in nature.
  3. Electrons play an important role in atoms as it provides shape, orientation, etc.
  4. Without electrons the atom is positively charged and hence no electricity is being conducted.
  5. Electrons help in the formation of the strongest bonds due to the positive-negative charge.
  6. The positive charge nucleus attracts the electrons and therefore the bond becomes stronger in nature.
  7. The net charge on electron is 1.602×10-19C.
