Question

Why is DC current not used in homes?

Open in App
Solution

DC current is not used in homes because of the following reasons:

  1. First of all, DC is difficult to generate because primarily it is generated by batteries and electrochemical of photovoltaic cells.
  2. Power loss during transmission is more in direct current as compared to alternating current.
  3. For the same value of voltage DC is more dangerous than AC. It will more troublesome if touched because the voltage does not go through zero.
  4. Direct current can not be easily stepped up or stepped down with the help of transformers whereas alternating current can easily be converted from low voltage to high voltage or vice-versa with the help of transformers.
  5. The possibility of electrolytic corrosion is more in DC than in AC.

Hence, DC is not used in homes.
