Dimensional Formula of Current Density

The dimensional formula of current density is given by,

[M0 L-2 T0 I1]

Where,

  • M = Mass
  • I = Current
  • L = Length
  • T = Time

Derivation

Current Density = Charge Γ— [Area Γ— Time]-1 . . . (1)

Since, charge = current Γ— time

Therefore, the dimensions of electric charge = [MLIT1] . . . . (2)

And, the dimensional formula of,

Area = [ML2 T0] . . . (3)

Time = [MLT1] . . . . (4)

On substituting equation (2) and (3) in equation (1) we get,

Current Density = Charge Γ— [Area Γ— Time]-1

= [MLIT1] Γ— [ML2 T0]-1 Γ— [MLT1]-1 = [M0 L-2 T0 I1].

Therefore, the current density is dimensionally represented as [M0 L-2 T0 I1].
