The dimensional formula ofΒ current density is given by,

Where,

  • M = Mass
  • I = Current
  • L = Length
  • T = Time

Derivation

Current DensityΒ = Charge Γ— [AreaΒ Γ— Time]-1 . . . (1)

Since, charge =Β current Γ— time

Therefore, the dimensions of electric charge = [M0Β L0Β I1Β T1] . . . . (2)

And, the dimensional formula of,

Area = [M0Β L2Β T0] . . . (3)

Time =Β [M0Β L0Β T1] . . . . (4)

On substituting equation (2) and (3) in equation (1) we get,

Current DensityΒ = Charge Γ— [AreaΒ Γ— Time]-1

= [M0Β L0Β I1Β T1]Β Γ— [M0Β L2Β T0]-1 Γ— [M0Β L0Β T1]-1 =Β [M0Β L-2 T0Β I1].

Therefore, the current density is dimensionally represented asΒ [M0Β L-2 T0Β I1].
